Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Winners By Year

This race is one of a select number of overseas contests that attract great interest within the British Isles. Founded in 1920 it might not be able to match some of England’s greatest races for history, but the purse puts pretty much all of them in the shade financially. With total prize money of €5m up for grabs it is the richest Flat race in Europe and one of the most valuable anywhere. It is held at Longchamp in Paris and usually takes place on the first Sunday in October. The contest – tagline “It’s not a race, it’s a monument” – is run over 2,400m, or around a mile and a half.

It is open to all horses aged at least three, although geldings are excluded, and over the years has been won by equine legends such as Mill Reef, Montjeu, Sea The Stars and filly Enable, who claimed back-to-back successes in 2017 and 2018. French horses lead the way in terms of overall victories but in recent times years the winner’s enclosure has often been more international. British and Irish animals have done well of late, whilst 2020 German Horse of the Year Torquator Tasso won in 2021.

2025 - Daryz

A thrilling finish saw Daryz deny hot favourite Minnie Hauk in the closing strides to claim this Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. Stepping up to a mile and a half for the first time on just his seventh career start, the Francis-Henri Graffard-trained colt showed tremendous stamina to overhaul the Oaks and Irish Oaks winner in a photo finish. Mickael Barzalona timed his challenge perfectly after Christophe Soumillon had sent Minnie Hauk into the lead two furlongs out. The victory marked a remarkable turnaround for Daryz, who had finished last in the Juddmonte International just two months earlier.

2024 - Bluestocking

Supplemented for the race at a cost of €120,000, Bluestocking rewarded her connections very handsomely, with a superb victory in Europe's premier middle-distance contest. Rossa Ryan made full use of a favourable low draw, saving ground throughout before committing for home a quarter of a mile from the finish. Only Prix Vermeille runner-up Aventure could mount a serious challenge, but never really looked likely to get past as Bluestocking stayed on strongly to score by a length and a quarter. The success fully justified Ralph Beckett's decision to supplement the filly, a decision made because he “couldn’t find a reason not to.” Well quite!

2023 - Ace Impact

Ace Impact confirmed his status as Europe's outstanding three-year-old with a breathtaking victory in 2023. Despite racing keenly before the start, the unbeaten favourite settled towards the rear before Cristian Demuro gradually improved his position around the outside. Westover briefly looked the likely winner entering the straight, but Ace Impact's devastating turn of foot carried him clear inside the final furlong to score by a length and three-quarters. The success completed a flawless career, as he was retired unbeaten immediately afterwards.

2022 - Alpinista

Sir Mark Prescott enjoyed the greatest triumph of his long training career as the mighty Alpinista held off two late challengers to win this famous contest. Training just his second Arc runner after more than five decades with a licence, Prescott watched Luke Morris produce a faultless ride on the grey mare, who travelled smoothly before taking command a furlong and a half from home. Vadeni and defending champion Torquator Tasso closed rapidly in the closing stages, but Alpinista found enough to secure a hugely popular success on heavy ground.

2021 - Torquator Tasso

One of the biggest shocks in the history of the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe unfolded as 72/1 outsider Torquator Tasso stormed home to deny Tarnawa and Hurricane Lane. The German-trained five-year-old travelled prominently throughout before Rene Piechulek launched his challenge down the outside inside the final furlong. Derby winner Adayar briefly looked set to make all on testing ground, only to be swallowed up late as Torquator Tasso produced an irresistible finishing burst. The surprise success came on Piechulek's first ride in the race and was just the third victory for a German-trained horse in France’s most famous contest.

2020 - Sottass

Sottsass delivered a perfectly timed performance to deny Enable a historic third victory in the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe. While the dual champion struggled to cope with heavy ground and suffered interference as the pace lifted, Cristian Demuro's mount travelled strongly before asserting in the closing stages to beat In Swoop, with Persian King third. A stewards' inquiry followed after several runners encountered interference, but the initial result stood, giving both Jean-Claude Rouget and Demuro a first success in Europe's most prestigious Flat race

2019 - Waldgeist

History narrowly eluded Enable as her bid for an unprecedented third consecutive Arc victory came to an end at Longchamp. Frankie Dettori positioned the hot favourite perfectly before she swept to the front two furlongs from home, prompting the crowd to roar her towards another famous success. However, Pierre-Charles Boudot spurred Waldgeist into a sustained late challenge through the middle of the track, taking control inside the final 50 yards to win by a length and three-quarters. In doing so, the five-year-old inflicted only the second defeat of Enable's career – not to mention costing Enable an incredible piece of racing history.

2018 - Enable

Enable successfully defended her crown in one of the race's most memorable finishes. Returning from an injury-disrupted campaign, the outstanding filly travelled strongly throughout before Frankie Dettori sent her into the lead entering the straight. James Doyle produced Sea Of Class with a devastating late run from the rear and looked certain to overhaul the leader, but Enable showed her class and dug deep to repel the challenge by a short neck. The victory made her the first British-trained dual winner of the race, while Dettori claimed a record sixth success.

2017 - Enable

Frankie Dettori enjoyed a record-breaking fifth victory in the 2017 race as Enable produced another dominant display. The filly travelled effortlessly throughout after Dettori secured the perfect position in the early stages before quickening clear inside the final two furlongs. Cloth Of Stars stayed on for second but never seriously threatened, as Enable crossed the line two and a half lengths clear in a performance that suggested the age and sex allowance made little difference. It completed a flawless campaign and confirmed her as Europe's leading middle-distance performer.

2016 - Found

Aidan O'Brien achieved one of the most remarkable feats of his career by saddling the first three home in this prestigious contest. Ryan Moore settled Found into an ideal position before making his move turning for home, quickly putting the result beyond doubt once a gap appeared. Highland Reel stayed on for second, with Order Of St George completing an extraordinary clean sweep for Ballydoyle. It is believed to be the first time a single trainer had filled the first three places in the race's history, making it one of O'Brien's finest achievements.
