The Berkshire venue of Ascot may be best known for the prestigious Royal Ascot Festival, which serves as the standout multi-day meeting of the flat racing year. However, it’s not all about events on the level at this wonderful racecourse, as Ascot also plays a significant role in the National Hunt season, with a host of high-profile handicaps and quality Graded contests lighting up the winter months.
The first of two Grade 1 chases at the track takes place in mid-January each year as the cream of the 2m division tackles 14 fences in pursuit of the £100,000 total prize money. A fine prize in its own right, the Clarence House Chase regularly serves as a key stepping stone for contenders with their eyes on the ultimate 2m prize of the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the Cheltenham Festival. As of 2024, seven horses have won this race and Queen Mother Champion Chase in the same year. Previous Clarence House Chase champs include Desert Orchid, Viking Flagship, Master Minded, Sprinter Sacre, and Altior.
