The British summertime is peppered by a steady stream of top-class racing festivals, with the next major meeting seemingly never too far away. July sees flat racing’s HQ get in on the act as Newmarket hosts the excellent July Festival. Squeezing in nine contests rated at Listed level or above, the highlight comes on the closing Saturday, as a field of crack sprinters set off in pursuit of July Cup glory.
As with so many of the biggest Newmarket races, the July Cup is a truly historic affair, having first been run in 1876, when Queen Victoria sat atop the throne. Close to 150 years on, the Group 1 event over six furlongs remains one of the flagship sprint contests of the season, with £600,000 (2024) in total prize money up for grabs. Open to colts, geldings, and fillies aged three years and older, the event helps determine who is the quickest of the quick, with previous winners including the sprinting superstars Diadem, Abernant, Oasis Dream, Muhaarar, and Harry Angel.
2026 - Comanche Brave
Japanese star Satono Reve headed the betting in a competitive 2026 edition. A trio of Royal Ascot winners were expected to provide the stiffest opposition in the shape of Mission Central, Venetian Sun, and Almeraq. All were upstaged by Irish raider Comanche Brave. Only seventh in the Queen Elizabeth II Jubilee Stakes, the Donnacha O’Brien speedball produced a career-best effort to hand his trainer, and also jockey Billy Loughnane, a first win in the race. The 11/1 shot upset them all, with Satono Reve as short as 2/1 at the off.

2025 - No Half Measures
No Half Measures produced one of the biggest shocks in July Cup history when scoring at 66/1 in the 149th running of the race. Ridden confidently by Neil Callan, the Richard Hughes-trained filly outran her odds to defeat Big Mojo and Run To Freedom in a memorable renewal. The victory was an emotional one for Hughes, whose stable had endured disappointment a day earlier, with Mood Queen finishing last in the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes.

2024 - Mill Stream
Mill Stream sprang a surprise at odds of 11/1 to land the cup, holding off the late challenge of Swingalong in a tightly fought finish. William Buick dug deep at the right moment and was rewarded with his 100th Group 1 success. It contributed to Buick’s domination of the day, as he ended with a 905-1 four-timer.

2023 - Shaquille
Shaquille confirmed himself as one of the leading sprinters in training with a dominant victory. Despite again being slow from the stalls, the Julie Camacho-trained colt quickly recovered before unleashing a powerful late surge to win by a length and a half. The performance closely mirrored his success in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot a few weeks earlier.

2022 - Alcohol Free
Alcohol Free successfully completed her transition from top-class miler to Group 1-winning sprinter with victory in the July Cup. Having finished well behind several of her rivals at Royal Ascot, the Andrew Balding-trained filly reversed that form in impressive fashion under Rob Hornby. Sent off at 14/1, she travelled strongly throughout before quickening clear in the closing stages. The win continued a memorable week for Hornby, who had secured his first Group 1 success just a day earlier.

2021 - Starman
A strong field featuring multiple Group 1 winners assembled for the race, but it was Starman who proved best. Trained by Ed Walker and ridden by Tom Marquand, the four-year-old overcame some traffic during the race before producing a decisive finishing effort. He pulled clear late on to defeat Dragon Symbol by over a length, with defending champion Oxted back in third. The victory provided Walker with the first Group 1 success of his training career.

2020 - Oxted
Oxted delivered a career-best performance to win the July Cup and provide jockey Cieren Fallon with his first Group 1 success. Racing prominently throughout, the Roger Teal-trained four-year-old travelled strongly before taking command approaching the final furlong. He quickened clear of his rivals and maintained his advantage to the line, with Sceptical finishing second. Runner-up Frankie Dettori had enjoyed many great battles with Fallon Sr, but it was his son who got the better of him this time.

2019 - Ten Sovereigns
Ten Sovereigns produced a commanding display to give Aidan O'Brien another victory in the July Cup. Extremely strong support in the betting saw the colt start among the market leaders, despite standing at 10/1 in the morning. He justified the confidence and cost the bookies a lot of money with a front-running performance under Ryan Moore. The victory moved Aidan O'Brien joint-top of the all-time list of July Cup-winning trainers.

2018 - U S Navy Flag
U S Navy Flag returned to top form when dropping back to six furlongs at Newmarket. Having competed in both the English and Irish 2000 Guineas earlier in the season, the Aidan O'Brien-trained colt was trying sprinting against older horses for the first time. Ryan Moore sent him straight to the front and the pair controlled the race throughout, pulling clear for a convincing victory.

2017 - Harry Angel
An eagerly anticipated clash between the leading sprinters of the season ended with Harry Angel firmly on top. Trained by Clive Cox, the three-year-old built on his Commonwealth Cup success by producing another high-class performance over six furlongs. Odds-on favourite Caravaggio arrived unbeaten and with a formidable reputation, but he was unable to match Harry Angel's pace and finished well behind the winner.

One of the strongest fields assembled for the July Cup in recent years was decisively won by Limato, who delivered a dominant display at Newmarket. Dropping back in trip after competing over a mile, the Henry Candy-trained runner travelled powerfully before quickening clear of a quality field. Despite drifting across the track in the closing stages, his superiority was never in doubt as he crossed the line two lengths ahead of his rivals.
