Just five runners lined up for the 2026 edition of the Dewhurst Stakes. However, contained within that quintet were the early favourites for the 2,000 Guineas and Epsom Derby. The race also presented the latest chapter in the decades-spanning Coolmore vs Godolphin rivalry, with the powerful owner/breeders boasting two runners apiece.
Unbeaten in two previous outings, 2,000 Guineas favourite Desert Castle led the Godolphin charge. Winning as he liked over seven furlongs of the July Course on debut, he showed similar authority when storming three lengths clear in the Group 2 Champagne Stakes last time out. The son of Frankel was a solid favourite throughout the week and retained that status on the day. Arriving with only a pair of novice wins to his name, Godolphin second-string Jassas had a lot to find on ratings as his starting price implied.
Eight-time Dewhurst Stakes winner Aidan O’Brien needed just one more to move clear at the top of the all-time trainers’ table. As the only previous Group 1 winner in the line-up, Darkness Falls was the clear Ballydoyle number 1. An impressive winner over 1m1f in the Golden Fleece Stakes, the big question was how the son of Camelot would cope with the drop to seven furlongs. Coventry Stakes-winning stablemate Great Barrier Reef moved in the opposite direction regarding the trip, with all four previous outings coming over six furlongs.
Gentle Hurricane, from the yard of British Trainers’ Championship-chasing Andrew Badling, completed the field. Having finished over six lengths behind Desert Castle in the Champagne Stakes, he looked up against it.

Recap
Ryan Moore immediately pushed Darkness Falls into the lead when the stalls opened. Godolphin second-string Jassas sat second up the centre of the track, with Great Barrier Reef third on the outside. William Buick was content to take a lead aboard Desert Castle in fourth, with Gentle Hurricane bringing up the rear.
Two furlongs into the race, Jassas held the overall advantage under Billy Loughnane. Darkness Falls moved well and was only around a neck back in second. The leading duo had moved a couple of lengths clear of Great Barrier Reef and Desert Castle with Gentle Hurricane still last of the five.
Passing halfway, Jassas maintained his narrow advantage over Darkness Falls, but the mount of Ryan Moore travelled much the best of the leading duo. William Buick had made a slight forward move aboard Desert Castle, who now sat on the heels of Darkness Falls. Great Barrier Reef was half a length further back in fourth, with Gentle Hurricane a length adrift in fifth.
Two furlongs from home, the anticipated battle began to unfold. With Jassas giving way, Darkness Falls and Moore made their bid for glory towards the rail. Desert Castle immediately responded to his outside, with Gentle Hurricane launching a brief challenge hard against the rail.
Passing the furlong pole, Darkness Falls held a neck advantage over Desert Castle, with Moore and Buick asking for everything. Neither runner gave an inch, but Darkness Falls felt the benefit of his prominent early position and his rider’s decision to make the first move. Under another Moore masterclass, the O’Brien runner held on, with Desert Castle a neck back in second. Great Barrier Reef did best of the rest in third.
A record-setting ninth win for Aidan O’Brien and a sixth for Ryan Moore. Darkness Falls replaced Desert Castle at the head of the 2,000 Guineas market and maintained his status as Derby favourite.
