Lockinge Stakes Winners By Year

As one of the finest dual-purpose racecourses in the land, the Berkshire venue of Newbury hosts an impressive collection of high-class events on the flat and over jumps. Topping the bill on the level is the track’s only Group 1 contest which serves as an early season highlight in May each year.

First run in 1958 and elevated to Group 1 status in 1995, the Lockinge Stakes takes its name from the nearby parish to the north of the town of Newbury. Open to runners aged four and older and offering a handsome £400,000 in prize money, the contest is a key early season target for the most talented older milers in training.

Looking back through the previous winners of this cracking contest presents a scattering of the greatest milers to ever take to the track. Famous names to have scorched the turf en route to victory include Brigadier Gerard, Cape Cross, Hawk Wing, Baeed, and the greatest of them all, Frankel, who stormed to a 5l success in the 2012 edition.
