One of the consistent elements of the major flat racing festivals is the presence of a marquee event for the stayers. York’s Dante Meeting has the Yorkshire Cup, Royal Ascot has the Gold Cup, and Doncaster’s St Leger Meeting has the Doncaster Cup. Not to be left out, Glorious Goodwood lays on a two-mile event for the most talented stamina-laden stars in training.
First run in 1812, the Goodwood Cup serves as one of the standout events on the opening day of the Panama Hat-strewn racing spectacular, which kicks off in late July/early August each year. Together with the Doncaster Cup and Gold Cup at Ascot, this Group 1 affair makes up the Stayers Triple Crown and awards £500,000 in total prize money. Open to all runners aged three and older, the history of the race is littered with all-time staying greats, including Le Moss, Double Trigger, Persian Punch and Stradivarius, who remarkably won the race in four successive years between 2017 and 2020 to become the most successful horse in Goodwood Cup history.
