Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe 2024: Results, Runners & Prize Money

With no obvious standout contender, the 2024 edition of the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe was one of the most wide-open in years. Arriving on the back of wins in the Grand Prix de Paris and the Prix Niel and going for eight-time winner of the race Andre Fabre, the three-year-old colt Sosie made his way to the head of the market.

Ralph Beckett’s admirable filly, Bluestocking, came next, following strong market support on the day. The pick of the Trials Day winners, having held off Aventure in the Prix Vermeille, could the mount of Rossa Ryan repeat the trick now tackling the colts? St Leger third Sunway completed the British challenge, whilst Ireland was represented by the Aidan O’Brien duo of Irish Derby hero Los Angeles and Continuous, who finished fifth in the 2023 edition, and Joseph O’Brien’s Al Riffa, who landed a German Group 1 on his previous start.

Another to note amongst the home team was the brilliant Prix du Jockey Club winner Look De Vega. Going for the father and son team of Carlos & Yann Lerner, the Al Shaqab runner had fluffed his lines in the Prix Niel but was reportedly below peak fitness that day and expected to bounce back on the big day.

Shin Emperor set out to bag a first Arc for Japan and, as a full brother to the 2019 winner Sottsass, was ideally bred for the job, whilst Fantastic Moon carried the hopes of Germany and added to the international flavour of Europe’s biggest 1m4f event.

Recap

With no confirmed frontrunner in the field, it was difficult to predict who would make the running. Bluestocking broke quickest from towards the rail, followed by Look De Vega in the centre of the track, but it was Ryan Moore who rousted Los Angeles to the head of affairs – doing very well to grab the lead against the inside rail from stall 10. Sosie obtained a nice early position just off the pace alongside Shin Emperor, with Continuous and Fantastic Moon amongst those held up towards the rear.

Approaching halfway, Los Angeles continued to set the fractions, opening up a length advantage over Bluestocking and Haya Zark, who made a move from midfield. Sunway, Sosie and Zarakem came next, followed by Shin Emperor. Look De Vega sat around five lengths off the lead but had wasted valuable energy when refusing to settle into a rhythm. Mqse De Sevigne and Continuous brought up the rear.

The drama unfolded before the turn into the false straight, with Haya Zark going wrong and shooting back through the field, badly hampering Continuous and Mqse De Sevigne. Los Angeles began his move early to bring his stamina into play and run the kick out of his rivals. This move stretched the field, but Bluestocking was going well on his heels, whilst Sunway, Sosie, and Zarakem were all well positioned to strike. Aventure caught the eye further back, whilst the strongest stayer in the field, Sevenna’s Knight, began to pick off rivals from towards the rear.

Moving into the home straight proper, the field began to fan out to launch their bids for glory. Los Angeles stuck on doggedly, but a lack of gears told as Bluestocking moved past and kicked for home. Sosie going for everything but also failing to find a turn of foot as owner-mate Aventure emerged as the biggest threat. However, Beckett’s star was not for passing as she stayed on powerfully to score by a length and a quarter from Aventure in a repeat of the 1-2 from the Prix Vermeille. It was a gallant effort from Los Angeles, who went out on his shield in third.

Having saddled Westover to finish second in 2023, Ralph Beckett went one better to record a first Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe success. A third career Group 1 for Rossa Ryan – three of which have come on this wonderful filly.
