The 2022 field featured a host of interesting contenders, including five of the first seven finishers from 2021. Heading up the returning party was defending champion Minella Times, although he faced a far sterner test this time around off top weight of 11st10lb. Multiple Grade 1 winner, Delta Work, looked the class horse in the race, and was popular in the betting, having recently broken the heart of Tiger Roll (and his many fans) at the Cheltenham Festival.
In the end, it was the third-placed finisher from 2021, Any Second Now, who was sent off favourite, just ahead of the Gordon Elliott runner, Run Wild Fred, who arrived on the back of a solid second in the National Hunt Chase. Colin Tizzard’s Fiddlerontheroof, and Longhouse Poet from the Irish yard of Colin Brassil were amongst the others attracting strong support on the day.

Recap
Always one of the most memorable contests of the season, the Grand National rarely fails to produce a compelling story. However, the race really outdid itself in 2022 – conjuring up a fairy-tale ending to one of the all-time great amateur careers.
Coko Beach and Two For Gold won the battle for the early lead, and took the field along at a decent pace. As is generally the case in this race, those formidable obstacles soon began to take their toll, with defending champion Minella Times and the well-fancied Run Wild Fred amongst the early departures. By the end of the first circuit, only 26 of the 40 runners remained.
The field continued to thin out as the race wore on, leaving only eight runners in with a realistic chance as they headed to the second last. As the stamina of Santini, Delta Work, and Fiddlerontheroof began to ebb away, it was left to the favourite Any Second Now and outsider Noble Yeats to battle it out as they rounded the elbow. In a titanic tussle, it was Noble Yeats who began to forge clear up the rail under the urgings of amateur rider Sam Waley-Cohen, ultimately hitting the line 2½l clear of the gallant runner-up.
As impressive as Noble Yeats was, it was the narrative surrounding Waley-Cohen which made this a National to remember. With six previous wins over the Grand National fences, Waley-Cohen was widely recognised as one of the finest Aintree riders – amateur or professional. He had, however, never won the big one, and prior to this race, announced that Noble Yeats would be the final ride of his career. When it comes to going out on a high, this takes some beating, especially at 50/1!
