1,000 Guineas 2024: Results, Runners & Prize Money

A winner of three of her four starts at two, including an impressive success in the Group 1, Moyglare Stakes at the Curragh, Karl Burke’s Fallen Angel was the choice of the market in a wide-open renewal. Aidan O’Brien sent just the one filly in pursuit of the prize in the shape of Ylang Ylang, who had toughed it out well to land the Fillies’ Mile over this track and trip in her final juvenile outing. Amongst the other fancied contenders, Oh So Sharp Stakes winner Dance Sequence was the Godolphin number one, whilst a late surge of money suggested a big run was expected from French raider Ramatuelle.

Further down the betting list, Cheveley Park Stakes winner Porta Fortuna appeared to get the mile well when a slightly unlucky runner-up in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ Turf, Pretty Crystal mastered Dance Sequence in the Nell Gynn Stakes on her previous outing and Elmalka had caught the eye when finishing strongly for third in the seven-furlong Dubai Duty Free on her seasonal return.

Recap

Richard Hannon’s outsider Star Style was quickly away and swiftly made her way to the head of affairs under Pat Dobbs, followed by the Karl Burke second string Darnation and another of the longshots Sacred Angel. The early pace appeared strong, with around 10 lengths opening up between the leader and Elmalka, who brought up the rear.

Star Style continued to force the issue as they hit halfway, with many of the riders in behind beginning to get to work. Fancied contenders Dance Sequence and Ylang Ylang sat in the slipstream of the frontrunner, with favourite Fallen Angel sitting just off Darnation towards the far side. Further back, David Menusier’s Tamfana travelled sweetly, whilst the more vigorously ridden Elmalka was beginning to make some headway.

Two furlongs from home, the race began to change in complexion as Star Style’s stamina gave way. Ramatuelle was the first to kick for home. Dance Sequence and Fallen Angel tried to go with her, but their efforts quickly flattened out, leaving Porta Fortuna, Ylang Ylang, and a staying on Elmalka to emerge as the main threats. Ramatuelle still led 100 yards from home but was swamped late by Porta Fortuna and a rattling home Elmalka, who got up to score by a neck from Porta Fortuna, with Ramatuelle clinging on for third from the unlucky in-running Tamfana.

It was a first 1,000 Guineas for Roger Varian and a third Classic win in total following his two St Leger victories. Silvestre De Sousa’s power-packed ride was rewarded with a debut Classic success for the former Champion Jockey.
