The Ups and Downs of Oisin Murphy: Champion Jockey Charged with Drink Driving

On the racing front, at least, it is fair to say that 2025 has begun rather well for Oisin Murphy. British Champion Jockey in 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2024, the 29-year-old rider has shown every sign that a fifth title could arrive in 2025.

However, as in the recent past, events have not run so smoothly away from the racecourse. Always dependable in the saddle, Murphy’s private life appears to be blighted by a lack of discipline. A striking example of the contrast between his career and personal life came on Thursday, 19 June.

On the same day that Murphy partnered Arabian Story (Britannia Stakes) and Never So Brave (Buckingham Palace Stakes) to secure a Royal Ascot double, he was charged in relation to a drink-driving offence.

Off Course in Newbury

Mercedes Steering Wheel

The incident in question occurred near Newbury on Sunday, 27 April. A statement from Thames Valley Police reads:

“The charge is in connection with a single vehicle road traffic collision around 12:05am on Sunday, April 27 this year, when a grey Mercedes A Class left the road and crashed into a tree.”

Reports suggest that a female passenger in her 20s was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the incident.

The specific charges levelled at the rider are “driving a motor vehicle whilst over the prescribed alcohol limit” and “failing to cooperate with a preliminary test at the roadside”.

Murphy is due to answer these charges at Reading Magistrates Court on Thursday, 3 July. Further information regarding the female passenger injured in the incident is awaiting.

Latest Misstep for Sublime Talent

Face Mask on Cobbles

This development marks the latest blot on Murphy’s record. Back in 2021, he was brought before the British Horseracing Authority to answer charges relating to a pair of Covid breaches in 2020 and failed alcohol tests in May and October of 2021. Unhappy with the impact on the sport’s image, the BHA added the overarching charge of:

“acting in a manner which is prejudicial to the proper integrity, conduct, and good reputation of the sport.”

The outcome was a hefty 14-month ban, keeping Murphy off the track between November 2021 and February 2023. Whether the current charges result in a similar reprimand remains to be seen. Responding to the news, the BHA released the following statement:

“The BHA is aware of an update issued by Thames Valley Police this afternoon regarding Mr Oisin Murphy. We are now seeking to gather as much information as possible in order to consider what, if any, implications there are as a result of this development.”

Ability Never in Doubt

At this stage, it is too early to speculate on any potential punishment. However, a significant ban would deprive Murphy of the chance to add to a record which includes 1,674 winners in Britain, headlined by a spectacular 220-win 2019 campaign. His career highlights include Classic wins in the 2000 Guineas (Kameko 2020) and 1000 Guineas (Mawj 2023), and five victories at the most recent edition of Royal Ascot.

Always available to the press and fans – and amongst the most informative and eloquent jockeys in the weighing room – Murphy is far from the first rider to experience issues away from the racecourse. However, few have possessed such natural talent. Whilst Murphy must take his medicine if facing punishment, there is hope he can emerge stronger and better equipped to manage the issues that have plagued a career that hopefully still remains destined for greatness.
