Ralph Beckett Ready for More Success in 2025

With the Craven Meeting at Newmarket about to stride into view and the opening Classics from HQ just over two weeks away, the 2025 flat season is beginning to move up through the gears.

We have much to look forward to over the summer months, with the traditional Royal Ascot and Glorious Goodwood extravaganzas complementing the five Classics and quality meetings at York, Newbury and elsewhere.

For trainers, jockeys, and owners, this is a time of year when excitement begins to build. Will the leading juveniles train on as hoped? Can the more talented older horses maintain their form? And which new stars will emerge? All will be revealed by the time the curtain comes down on Champions Day in October.

Whilst the story of the season remains unwritten, it would take a brave punter to bet against a certain Hampshire handler playing a prominent role in the plot. Following a career-best year, and with his stock on the rise, Ralph Beckett is taking aim at 2025.

2024: A Tale of Triumph

At the end of any flat season, there are those trainers whom we expect to see towards the head of the prize money lists – the O’Briens, Gosdens, and Applebys of this world. However, in recent seasons, Ralph Becket has thrust himself firmly into the mix. Whilst no match for the £8million+ gathered in by O’Brien, Beckett’s tally of £3,830,337 in British prize money was only just shy of that earned by Charlie Appleby and the Gosden operation.

A handy 11 Group successes contributed to the Beckett haul in 2024, headlined by the Group/Grade 1 triumphs of Bluestocking (Pretty Polly Stakes, Prix Vermeille, Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe), You Got To Me (Irish Oaks), and Starlust (Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint). That total of 11 Group-class victories represented an improvement of two from 2023. Can Beckett build again in the current campaign?

Hopes Are High for 2025

Ralph Beckett’s Stanhope Gardens, Starzintheireyes and I Am I Said hold Derby entries

With Bluestocking heading into a well-earned retirement, the stable star seat is vacant at Beckett’s Kimpton base. However, a scan through his squadron reveals a host of names who may be ready, willing, and able to take up the reins. If Beckett is to enjoy yet another productive campaign, the following runners are among those worth keeping an eye on:

  • Kinross – Now eight years old, this admirable performer has represented the Beckett yard with distinction since 2019. A nine-time Group winner, he is likely to target the biggest 7f events once again
  • You Got To Me – Having finished fourth at Epsom, this Nathaniel filly claimed Classic success in the Irish Oaks at the Curragh. Kept in training at four, she looks the sort who may improve with age
  • Starlust – Caused a 34/1 shock when coming with a storming late effort to claim the Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint at Del Mar to add to a Listed success at York. One to look out for in strongly run sprint contests
  • Stanhope Gardens – By exciting emerging sire Ghaiyyath, this good-looking chestnut hit the frame in all three starts at two. Last sighted finishing a neck second to recent Ballysax Stakes winner Delacroix, he holds entries in both the 2000 Guineas and Derby
  • Bright Times Ahead – This daughter of Lope De Vega appeared only once during her juvenile campaign but hit the ground running with an impressive success at Nottingham. Has entries in both the 1000 Guineas and The Oaks
  • Starzintheireyes – Progressed throughout 2024 to claim the Group 3 Zetland Stakes at Newmarket. That form looks solid, with the runner-up that day subsequently filling the same position in the Grade 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud. Having impressed over 1m2f as a juvenile, a step up in trip for the Derby may be on the cards
  • I Am I Said – By Almanzor and out of a Galileo mare, I Am I Said made a striking impression when scooting away from his rivals on debut at Nottingham. Given his pedigree, a tilt at the Derby looks like the obvious target
  • Doha -By Arc winner Sea The Stars and out of Arc winner Treve, Doha is one of the most impressively bred mares in training. Nothing went right for her on Champions Day, but her previous efforts suggest she may be up to striking at Group level

The above eight runners only scratch the surface of the impressive Beckett team. With a host of others open to improvement and an exciting team of youngsters yet to appear, 2025 has the potential to be another very good year for the Arc-winning trainer. Definitely one to watch!
