Grand National 2025: Results, Runners & Prize Money

As the runners set off in 2025, the market had narrowly settled on the Oliver Greenall & Josh Guerriero-trained Iroko as the most likely winner. Unexposed over staying trips, he looked the sort to go well for owner JP McManus.

Also sporting the famous green and gold silks, 2024 champ I Am Maximus came next and was one of six runners hailing from the seemingly unstoppable Willie Mullins operation. Joining I Am Maximus on the journey over the Irish Sea were 2024 seventh Meetingofthewaters, the classy Grangeclare West, stamina-laden Minella Cocooner, Grade 1 winner Appreciate It, and Bobbyjo Chase champ Nick Rockett.

Cross Country Chase hero Stumptown, 2023 runner-up Vanillier, and Perceval Legallois represented the Gold Cup winning yard of Gavin Cromwell. Irish Grand National winner, Intense Raffles and a quintet of runners from the Gordon Elliott operation added to a potent Irish challenge.

Shark Hanlon’s Hewick was another fancied to go well on the quick ground, whilst – Iroko aside – Beauport, Hyland, and Kandoo Kid were the leading lights amongst the home team.

Recap

Restricted to 34 runners for the second time, the 2025 edition was more dramatic than that of 2024, with three fallers and only 16 runners completing the course. As in 2024, class largely came to the fore in a race that produced one of the most remarkable achievements in the long history of the race.

No drama at the first fence, with all 34 runners jumping safely. Broadway Boy, Celebre d’Allen, and Threeunderthrufive led the way, with Hewick and I Am Maximus also prominent – the latter seemingly keen to save ground around the inside.

Over the third fence, Broadway Boy won the battle for the lead. Duffle Coat made his exit at this stage, whilst a juddering blunder put Coko Beach on the back foot.

Broadway Boy had opened up a clear advantage as the field jumped Becher’s Brook for the first time, followed through by Hewick, Threeunderthrufive, Three Card Brag, and Beauport. The Paul Nicholls duo of Bravemansgame and Hitman raced prominently, with the Mullins sextet content to play a waiting game.

The well-fancied Perceval Legallois was the next to depart at Valentines, badly hampering Fil Dor and Coko Beach. Broadway Boy ploughed on at the head of affairs, with Three Card Brag, Beauport, Hewick, and Bravemansgame completing a wave of four in behind. Still no move from the Mullins squadron.

No change in the lead as the runners moved past halfway. However, a swathe of Mullins runners, including Nick Rockett, I Am Maximus, and Meetingofthewaters began to catch the eye just behind the leaders. In contrast, the remaining Gavin Cromwell duo of Stumptown and Vanillier appeared to find the pace too hot. Iroko was a little tapped for toe but clung on to the front group.

The complexion of the contest began to change six from home with the departure of Broadway Boy. Fellow pacesetters Beauport and Three Card Brag began to struggle, as the race opened up for those coming from behind.

The Mullins duo Grangeclare West and Nick Rocket moved through to jump the second last in unison. I Am Maximus switched into the clear out wide, with Iroko and Meetingofthewaters staying on through weakening horses from further back.

With Grangeclare West blundering at the final fence, Nick Rockett and reigning champ I Am Maximus fought it out on the run-in. Almost level rounding the elbow, it was Nick Rockett who stayed on best of all to record a 2½l success. I Am Maximus went out on his shield in second, with Grangeclare West rallying for third, and Iroko running a fine race in fourth.

It was a simply sensational result for Willie Mullins, who became the first trainer to saddle the 1-2-3 in the Aintree showpiece. The Closutton maestro saddled six runners in 2025, five of whom finished in the first seven. Not content with that, Mullins also sired the winning rider, Patrick Mullins, who claimed a first Grand National success on a hugely emotional and joyous day for the Mullins family.

Nick Rockett carried the silks of Stewart and Sadie Andrew, lending a poignant touch to the result – Sadie Andrew having passed away shortly after helping purchase the horse in 2022.
