Much of the talk in the lead-up to the 2021 edition of the race centred around whether or not Tiger Roll would bid for a third Grand National success. In the end, the legendary Gordon Elliott runner skipped the race, but his absence didn’t detract too much from the first Grand National to be held behind closed doors.
The big market move came for the Jonjo O’Neill-trained Cloth Cap, who had caught the eye of many when winning Kelso’s Premier Chase. Also prominent in the market were Any Second Now and Minella Times, who both went in the Green and Gold of JP McManus, and the Willie Mullins-trained, Burrows Saint.

Recap
An unusual renewal of the world’s most famous steeplechase, the 2021 edition proved to be a truly historic affair – courtesy of the jockey of the winning horse.
Jett, Any Second Now, and the favourite Cloth Cap, were among those to gain a prominent early position. Most of the trouble came in the middle of the pack, with 2020 runner-up Magic Of Light being one of the early departures. Headed into the second circuit, Jett continued to take them along, opening up a 12-length lead at one stage. However, the gap began to close around four from home, with Burrows Saint and Minella Times travelling notably well in behind.
It was Minella Times who took it up at the second last, and with Burrows Saint beginning to fade, it was 100/1 shot Balko Des Flos who emerged as the biggest challenger. Nothing could get to Rachael Blackmore and Minella Times though, as the pair powered home to score by 6½l.
A notable achievement for Henry De Bromhead who trained the first and second home. However, it was Blackmore who etched her name into the record books – becoming the first female rider to win Aintree’s greatest race and achieving a feat that for a long time was thought impossible by many so-called racing experts.
