Grand National 2019: Results, Runners & Prize Money

All of the talk in the lead-up to the 2019 edition of the race centred around one of the most popular horses in training – the Gordon Elliott-trained Tiger Roll. Winning a thriller here in 2018, could he become the first horse to successfully defend his crown since the great Red Rum in 1974? The betting said he could, with a huge public gamble seeing Tiger Roll sent off as the 4/1 favourite for this 40-runner handicap affair.

This was, however, far from a one-horse race. Many of Tiger Roll’s challengers came from his own yard, with Gordon Elliott being responsible for no fewer than 11 of the starting field. Fellow Irish trainer Willie Mullins also appeared to boast a strong hand, with Rathvinden and 2018 runner up, Pleasant Company both prominent in the betting. The Trevor Hemmings-owned duo of Vintage Clouds and Lake View Lad were the shortest-priced British contenders. And fun fact, they’re both grey.

Recap

This was a classic renewal of the great race – and one which ultimately delivered the dream result, as Davy Russell produced the incomparable Tiger Roll to land his second Grand National in spectacular style.

The only mare in the field, Magic Of Light, was one of the early leaders, taking the field along with the help of Go Conquer and Step Back. Early casualties included the well-fancied Vintage Clouds, who made it no further than the first fence. As the race wore on, the front of the field began to have a strong Irish flavour, with Rathvinden and Pleasant Company joining Magic Of Light at the head of affairs.

Slowly sneaking closer in the Gigginstown first colours was Tiger Roll, with Davy Russell smuggling the champ from midfield onto the heels of the leaders. Despite pecking on landing at the fifth and fourth from home, Russell began to exude confidence as they approached the second last. Magic Of Light kicked first headed to the final fence, but Tiger Roll simply cruised through around the elbow, ultimately coming home almost three lengths clear of the gallant mare, with Rathvinden in third, and Becher Chase winner Walk In The Mill back in fourth.

It was a spectacular performance from a legendary horse, as Tiger Roll made light of a nine-pound higher mark than when successful in 2018. It was a second Grand National success for Davy Russell, and a third for Gordon Elliott.
