A dozen runners lined up in the 2026 edition of Europe’s richest mile contest, with the market headed by the only British Classic winner in the field. Unbeaten in five career starts, George Boughey’s Bow Echo followed up his 2,000 Guineas success with a narrow victory in a tactically run St James’s Palace Stakes and started as the clear favourite.
One of three Aidan O’Brien runners in the field, Gstaad came next in the market as he lined up for a third crack at the favourite. Just under three lengths behind Bow Echo at Newmarket, Gstaad claimed a Classic of his own with an easy three-length victory in the Irish 2,000 Guineas at the Curragh.
Heading to Royal Ascot for a second meeting with Bow Echo, he just lost out in a ding-dong battle, with a short head the margin of defeat. Was he favoured by the way the race panned out that day? Or had he genuinely closed the gap? We would find out more here. Of the other O’Brien runners, Dorset looked booked for pace-making duties, but Puerto Rico was a Group 1 winner at two and finished a solid fourth in the French 2,000 Guineas on his seasonal return.
Two years after claiming a first Sussex Stakes with Notable Speech, Charlie Appleby relied on the four-year-old Opera Ballo. Making his Group 1 breakthrough in the Jebel Hatta at Meydan in January, he followed up in the bet365 Mile before finishing a respectable third in the Queen Anne Stakes.
Moving down the list, Lake Forest attempted to win two Glorious Goodwood contests in as many days, following his victory in the Lennox Stakes. Qirat finished fourth in that Day 1 contest but memorably caused a 150/1 shock in the 2025 edition of this and returned to defend his crown.
Others to note included shock Queen Anne Stakes winner Ten Bob Tony, and Docklands, who caused a similar upset when winning the 2025 edition of the Royal Ascot contest.

Recap
Opera Ballo, Gstaad, and 2025 winner Qirat all broke well. Dorset wasn’t so sharp from the stalls but was soon rousted into the lead by Wayne Lordan and set about enforcing a strong gallop.
Heading into the turn, Dorset had opened up a two-length advantage over Opera Ballo in second, with Qirat maintaining his prominent position in third. Seagulls Eleven came next, followed by the Aidan O’Brien duo of Gstaad to the inside and Puerto Rico to the outer. Hot favourite Bow Echo sat on the heels of his old rival Gstaad in seventh. Around a dozen lengths between first and last at this stage, with Lake Forest and Zavateri bringing up the rear.
Kicking off the home turn, Dorset still held the lead, with Qirat pursuing an O’Brien pacemaker, just as he had in 2025. Opera Ballo was nicely positioned to strike in third, ahead of Seagulls Eleven. The big guns of Bow Echo and Gstaad were yet to make their move. Further back, Lake Forest travelled well but found himself surrounded and would need luck in running.
Two furlongs from home, Dorset finally gave way. Qirat briefly led but soon wilted, leaving Opera Ballo to make his bid for glory. Three lengths clear at the furlong pole, Buick headed to the far rail for assistance. Further back, the closers, most notably Gstaad and Bow Echo, were beginning to find their stride.
With half a furlong to go, Gstaad got to Opera Ballo and looked the likely winner. However, Bow Echo was now in the clear and eating up the ground. With 50 yards to go, Loughnane cut a confident figure as Bow Echo’s building momentum took him past Gstaad for a stunning half-length success in a vintage renewal of the Sussex Stakes. Gstaad was second once again, with Opera Ballo best of the older horses in third.
In extending his perfect record to six, Bow Echo handed George Boughey and Billy Loughnane their first wins in the Day 2 feature at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
