Many of the biggest flat contests of the season take place in the south of the country. However, as fine as the tracks at Ascot, Epsom, Goodwood, and so on are, southern England doesn’t have a monopoly on outstanding racecourses. The pick of the bunch on the Northern racing scene and a match for just about any track in the land is the wonderful venue of York.
Offering stellar facilities and a memorable race day experience, the Knavesmire venue serves up a racing programme to match. Kicking off with the Spring Festival in May, York provides regular highlights through to the season-ending fixture in October. Top of the pile is the magnificent four-day Ebor Festival in August.
Home to ten Group class contests, the headline acts are provided by the Group 1 duo of the Yorkshire Oaks and this outstanding 1m2f contest. Won by stellar names such as Dahlia, Halling, Sea The Stars, and Frankel, the £1.2m Juddmonte International is regularly amongst the highest-rated contests held anywhere in the world.
2025 - Ombudsman
Ombudsman gained revenge on Delacroix with a brilliant victory in 2025, reversing the form from their Eclipse clash at Sandown. The six-runner field produced an unlikely spectacle as 150/1 outsider Birr Castle opened up a huge lead and still held a commanding advantage approaching the final quarter mile. William Buick was alert to the danger, however, and sparked Ombudsman into action at just the right moment. The horse responded brilliantly with a devastating turn of foot inside the final furlong. The favourite swept past before pulling three and a half lengths clear, with Delacroix edging Birr Castle for second.

2024 - City Of Troy
City Of Troy confirmed his place among the season's outstanding performers with a record-breaking victory. Ryan Moore allowed the Derby and Eclipse winner to dictate matters from the front before quickening clear in the straight to defeat Calandagan by a length. Both horses eclipsed Sea The Stars' long-standing course record, although City Of Troy's relentless gallop and effortless acceleration ultimately proved decisive. The success completed another Group 1 triumph for Aidan O'Brien, who described the colt as the finest horse he had ever trained. Now that is a serious piece of praise indeed.

2023 - Mostahdaf
Frankie Dettori became the most successful jockey in Juddmonte International history after guiding Mostahdaf to victory for John and Thady Gosden. Standing in for the suspended Jim Crowley, Dettori set a strong pace from the outset to expose odds-on favourite Paddington's stamina. The tactics worked perfectly, with Mostahdaf maintaining his advantage all the way to the line under a brilliant ride. Stablemate Nashwa stayed on for second to complete a Gosden one-two, while Paddington's winning streak came to an end in third.

2022 - Baeed
Sea The Stars colt Baaeed answered the only remaining question of his career with a devastating display on his first start beyond a mile. Stepping up to 10 furlongs for the first time, the unbeaten star travelled comfortably before Jim Crowley unleashed him in the straight, where he effortlessly surged six and a half lengths clear of defending champion Mishriff. Sir Busker finished a distant third after a slow start as Baaeed stretched his perfect record to 10 wins, further cementing his status as one of the best around. This proved to be Baaeed’s final victory though, as he retired following defeat in the Champion Stakes two months later.

2021 - Mishriff
Mishriff produced one of the standout performances of his career to claim a first domestic Group 1 victory. David Egan settled the colt just behind the leaders before cruising into contention entering the straight. Once asked for his effort, Mishriff quickly left his rivals behind to score by six lengths from Alenquer, with Love finishing third. The winning margin was the biggest in the race since the mighty Frankel's unforgettable seven-length triumph in 2012. Following the victory, Mishriff was awarded a BHA Flat rating of 127, drawing level with Adayar as Britain's highest-rated horse.

2020 - Ghaiyyath
From the moment the stalls opened, Ghaiyyath led throughout as he produced a front-running masterclass. Charlie Appleby's five-year-old maintained a relentless gallop throughout, leaving elite rivals including Magical, Lord North and Kameko unable to land a meaningful challenge. Winning by three lengths, Ghaiyyath further strengthened his claim to be the world's leading racehorse. The performance was later recognised as the highest-rated of his career and helped secure the title of Longines World's Best Racehorse for 2020.

2019 - Japan
Japan announced himself as one of Europe's leading middle-distance horses with a determined victory in this highly prized event. In what proved to be an especially competitive renewal, five horses narrowly trailed the favourite, Crystal Ocean, with just a furlong remaining. At this point, Ryan Moore delivered Aidan O'Brien's colt with a perfectly timed challenge, getting up in the closing strides to deny the outstanding older rival. The success continued Japan's rapid improvement after a modest effort at York earlier in the season and gave him a second consecutive Group 1 victory.

2018 - Roaring Lion
Roaring Lion added another Group 1 success with a decisive victory in a high-class renewal. Oisin Murphy enjoyed a much smoother passage than chief rival Poet's Word, whose challenge was delayed after becoming trapped behind horses in the straight. By this point, Roaring Lion had already seized the initiative and stayed on strongly to defeat the King George winner by over three lengths, with 50/1 outsider Thundering Blue taking third. It was a particularly glorious moment for Murphy, who was left to celebrate just his third Group 1 success.

2017 - Ulysses
Ulysses confirmed his position among Britain's leading middle-distance performers with victory in the valuable Group 1 event. Jim Crowley kept the Eclipse winner close to the pace before asking him to challenge inside the final two furlongs. At the time Ulysses was kept company by two younger rivals, favourite Churchill and second-favourite Barney Roy, who both attempted to respond, but the four-year-old found another gear and pulled clear to win by two lengths.

2016 - Postponed
Postponed returned from a respiratory infection in emphatic style to extend his winning streak to six races here in 2016. Forced to miss the King George only weeks earlier, Roger Varian's stable star quickly showed he had lost none of his ability. Andrea Atzeni sent the five-year-old to the front entering the straight, where he always looked in control before beating Highland Reel by a length and a quarter. The victory was his fourth Group 1 success and established him as the leading contender for the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe.
