Punchestown Gold Cup: Fact To File vs Gaelic Warrior, Round Five

Saturday afternoon saw the curtain fall on the domestic National Hunt season as Sandown staged the Jumps Finale meeting. However, the party continues for a little longer over in Ireland, with the last week in April signalling the start of one of the most anticipated multi-day meetings of the year.

Raising the four days of the Cheltenham Festival by one, the Punchestown Festival begins on Tuesday, 28th April and concludes on Saturday, 2nd May. Taking place six weeks after events at Prestbury Park, this outstanding fixture features 12 Grade 1 contests and attracts many of the stars of March.

With the Mullins battalions out in force, strong challenges from the likes of Gordon Elliott and Henry de Bromhead, and a smattering of British raiders, heavyweight clashes pepper the five days. Of those titanic tussles, one of the most spectacular may arrive in the Wednesday highlight of the Ladbrokes Punchestown Gold Cup.

Sitting on respective marks of 176 and 175, Gaelic Warrior and Fact To File are the highest-rated chasers in training on either side of the Irish Sea. With the list of Punchestown Gold Cup contenders down to five, both horses remain on course to lock horns for a fifth time at the track.

Star Names with Glittering CVs

Both hailing from the yard of Willie Mullins, Fact To File and Gaelic Warrior have made significant contributions to the Grade 1 haul of the Closutton maestro.

Sporting the pink silks of Mrs Susannah Ricci, Gaelic Warrior has struck six times at the highest level, amassing over £1 million in prize money. Highlights on that stellar CV include wins in the 2024 Arkle Chase and the 2025 Aintree Bowl at the Grand National meeting. However, his greatest performance came last time out in the Cheltenham Gold Cup. Confidently ridden by an ice-cool Paul Townend, the eight-year-old cruised to a stunning eight-length success in the hottest staying chase of the season.

While not quite able to match the record of Gaelic Warrior, Fact To File isn’t too far behind. One year older than his stablemate, the JP McManus-owned star has five Grade 1 wins to his name and over £700,000 in prize money. In three visits to the Cheltenham Festival, the Poliglote gelding has finished second in the Champion Bumper and registered a win in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase and a nine-length rout in the 2025 Ryanair Chase. Having missed his Ryanair defence on account of the ground, he has enjoyed a lighter campaign than his Gold Cup-winning stablemate.

Score Stands at Two Wins Apiece

With both runners priced around 5/4, the bookmakers are finding it tough to split Gaelic Warrior and Fact To File in the Punchestown Gold Cup market. A look back at the four previous clashes between the superstar duo doesn’t make the picture much clearer:

  • 2024 Ladbroke Novice Chase – Fact To File and Gaelic Warrior were the only two runners to show up for this Grade 1 contest at Leopardstown. Gaelic Warrior started as the 4/7 favourite but may have been better off staying at home. Jumping erratically throughout, his errors finally caught up with him as he unseated Paul Townend at the last, by which stage he was already 17 lengths behind Fact To File
  • 2025 John Durkan Memorial Chase – If the first meeting was something of a non-event, the second proved to be an all-time classic. Locking horns over 2m3½f in this November contest, Gaelic Warrior quickly opened up a yawning gap to his rivals. Fact To File then closed the distance, turning for home and seeming sure to move past his trailblazing rival. However, Gaelic Warrior wasn’t done with yet, with the long-time leader rallying to score by a heroic neck
  • 2025 King George VI Chase – Following that pulsating success at Punchestown, Gaelic Warrior played his part in a memorable renewal of the Boxing Day highlight at Kempton. One of four runners in line over the last, he ultimately settled for third – a short head behind winner The Jukebox Man, but nine lengths ahead of Fact To File, who produced a laboured effort in sixth
  • 2025 Paddy Power Irish Gold Cup – The evidence from the King George suggested that Gaelic Warrior may hold the edge over three miles. However, that theory was turned on its head at Leopardstown. Leaving his Kempton effort well behind, Fact To File travelled supremely well throughout and cruised clear on the run-in to score by five lengths, with Gaelic Warrior back in second

Punchestown Gold Cup 2026 Betting

Ratings and the betting market suggest that the Punchestown Gold Cup is most likely to fall to one of the heavyweights at the head of the market. However, talent lurks elsewhere in the field.

Also sporting the green and gold of JP McManus, Inothewayurthinkin posted his best effort of the season when third in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last time. A hugely talented performer on his day, the Gavin Cromwell star proved six lengths too good for his rivals in the 2025 edition of that Cheltenham Festival feature. If his latest effort signalled an imminent return to peak form, he could be a big threat to all.

In a field crammed with Mullins runners, Grangeclare West will hope to improve on a first-fence fall in the Aintree Grand National, while the outsider Champ Kiely completed the National to finish in eighth.

Will Gaelic Warrior or Fact To File claim top spot in the latest leg of their personal duel, or will the prize head elsewhere? All eyes are on the feature race on Day 2 at the Punchestown festival.
