The Paso owes its
origins to Barb and Andalusian
horses imported to South America by
the Spaniards in the 15th and 16th
centuries. Its unusual lateral gait
with an outward arcing of the
forelegs is thought to be inherited
from the Spanish jennet. It gives a
very smooth ride and the Paso can
reach speeds of up to 15 mph over
rough terrain.
