The Exmoor is believed to date from prehistoric times
and the moor's isolation meant there has been little cross-breeding to
change the pony from its early ancestors. They are extremely hardy and
run wild - but are rounded up once a year for branding and registration.
They are strong enough to carry adults and despite their wild
upbringing, make good children's ponies with training. |
Origin: Exmoor, Somerset. |
Colour: Brown, bay or mousy dun. |
Height: up to 12.2 hands (mares) 12.3
(stallions and geldings). |
Conformation: broad forehead, bold eyes, thick
neck and deep chest, short, clean legs and hard feet, dense coat. |
Character: intelligent, kind natured. |
Uses: riding. |
